a. Radiation levels at a nuclear reactors expose the general public to risks much higher than background Radiation Levels.
b. The maximum radiation dose allowed for the general public as a result of nuclear industry (e.g. uranium mining or nuclear reactor), is about 1 mSv per year above the background level.
c. Ionising radiation includes UV, x-rays, cosmic and gamma rays, alpha and beta particles, but not visible, infra-red and microwaves.
d. There is a hypothesis that the effect of a given absorbed dose of radiation will be less if it is extended over a longer time, compared to receiving the dose in one hit.
e. Personal Radiation badges monitor the accumulated dose received by a person and can distinguish some of the main types of radiation.
Question a) is incorrect. The amount of radiation escaping the confines of a nuclear power plant in negligible. This is indicated by question b which is correct.
specifically interested in Ca. state laws. Also if any laws exist in other states. Do they give tickets for talking on cell-phones while driving. When will laws go into effect in Ca.?
Cell-phone use while driving is not only incredibly rude to other drivers, but it is a clear and present danger to the public.
In Chicago and a lot of Chicago-area suburbs, driving while using your cell phone will earn you a $65 ticket. You can use a hand-free device, though. Personally, I don’t see how this is better (unless you have a bluetooth or something similar) because my hands-free earpeice falls out of my ear easily, and I am more of a hazard trying to find the thing once it has fallen out then replace it than I would be just driving with the phone against my ear. Hence, no driving while dialing for me.
usually dont talk much on the cell.but if i were to be on the phone for a couple hours, am i at risk in getting cancer or a brain tumor? or does that have to be everyday to get one? kinda worried
What?! Ive never heard of such a thing!
I am very scared about the possibility that the radiation from phones causes cancer. Does the radiation stay on your hands after taking a call or texting? Also, does the radiation stay in the room?
radiation from mobile phones is not nuclear radiation so talk of half life etc is rubbish. It is electromagnetic radiation (as is heat and light) – there may be risks but extensive studies have not shown a definite link. The advice is for young people not to be on calls with the headset by your ear for more than 30 minutes/day. When not on a call or downloading data, phones give of barely any radiation. Whatever radiation exists, it does not persist – it travels away from you at the speed of light – so nothing to wash off your hands.
Creating jewelry with old clock and watch parts is a fun art form, but one must be aware that old watch and clock faces and hands are sometimes coated with radium paint. The Radiation Levels measured here are not particularly dangerous UNLESS this radium coating falls of and gets inhaled or swallowed. Then some unlucky internal organ will get a constant close-up dose of radiation. Not so good.
If you’re going to be disassembling old clocks to harvest gears and other parts, please consider borrowing or buying a radiation meter for your safety and that of the people who buy your steampunk creations.

Controversial data
A 2008 University of Utah analysis looked at nine studies – including some Herberman cites – with thousands of brain tumor patients, and concluded “we found no overall increased risk of brain tumors among cellular phone users. The potential elevated risk of brain tumors after long-term cellular phone use awaits confirmation by future studies.”
Studies last year in France and Norway concluded the same thing.
“If there is a risk from these products – and at this point we do not know that there is – it is probably very small,” the Food and Drug Administration says on an agency Web site.
Still, Herberman cites a “growing body of literature linking long-term cell phone use to possible adverse health effects including cancer.”
“Although the evidence is still controversial, I am convinced that there are sufficient data to warrant issuing an advisory to share some precautionary advice on cell phone use,” he wrote in his memo.

A driving force behind the memo was Devra Lee Davis, the director of the university’s center for environmental oncology.
“The question is, do you want to play Russian roulette with your brain,” she said in an interview from her cell phone while using the hands-free speaker phone as recommended. “I don’t know that cell phones are dangerous. But I don’t know that they are safe.”
Of concern are the still-unknown effects of more than a decade of cell phone use, with some studies raising alarms, said Davis, a former health adviser in the Clinton administration.

soldiers that have fought in the Gulf War have been known to be exposed to high uranium radioactive levels. up to which levels of radiation have they been exposed?
@Michael They were exposed to Uranium 238. They put it in anti-tank rounds and tank armor because it’s so dense and heavy. They still use it even today. In it’s normal state it’s harmless because it’s surrounded by steel but when it bursts open and the tank burns it gets into the air. Uranium 238 is also known as "yellow cake" or "depleted Uranium". It’s raw Uranium that gets dug up and not "enriched" into the fissionable Uranium-235 used in nukes.
If I had to guess I would say they were exposed to up to 300 or 400 rems. That’s enough to make you pretty sick and cause cellular damage. But I’m not a physicist or chemist. Your not likely to get an accurate answer as officially "no one knows" what causes the syndrome.
