Mr. Sachin Pilot – Minister of State for Communications and IT addresses the issue of mobile tower radiation at the central level and says it is high time we address the issue of radiation, as strong objections have been raised by experts and civil society over the uncontrolled spread of mobile towers and import of cheap handsets that could have serious impact on the health of people.
Prof Girish Kumar from Electrical Engg Dept, IIT Bombay mentions residents face health problems like headache, loss of memory, concentration problems in the
beginning and prolong exposure can lead to even cancer. Experts say a continuous 20-minute contact between the human ear and mobile phone increases temperature of blood flowing through a user’s brain, which could be dangerous, while high levels of radiation from towers can affect lives of people living around it.
One particular case Prof. Kumar highlights is of a lady who is currently diagonized with cancer and has a cell tower adjacent to her house a few 10 meters away. On measuring the radiation level the readings were found to be very high of the order -6 to -8dBm. Similarly, raditiation levels in some places at Gurgaon, Delhi showed radiation values as high as 0 dBm.
Prof Kumar puts forward his calculations on the amount of power an average human adult will be exposed to with the current radiation norm. On cumulating the power values are comparable to putting an individual in a microwave oven for 20 minutes per day.
India has currently adopted ICMR norm of 9W/kg where as Russia and European countries have adopted radiation norm values 450 – 9000 times lesser. While European nations have just three to five operators, in India the number of operators now stands at 15.
India has around 4.5-lakh towers today and many more are being added to meet the demand of almost 65-crore mobile subscribers, which is growing at 1.5-crore
every month, the highest in the world.

MOSCOW, Aug. 6 (UPI) — Moscow was shrouded in smoke Friday as authorities warned of a possible radioactive cloud that could form if the wildfires raging in Russia spread to an area contaminated by the Chernobyl accident.
The images emerging from Moscow Friday look like they were taken from a doomsday movie: A giant smoke cloud has made the landmarks including the Kremlin disappear, with the few commuters who have to leave their houses or cars moving around wearing face masks. The others stay inside, desperate to evade the worst smog in the capital since the fires started more than a week ago. Pollution in Moscow, experts warned, is four times above safe levels.
“It’s a serious reason not just for the aged, children and pregnant not to go out into the street but also for people in good health,” Yevgenia Semutnikova, of the pollution watchdog Mosekomonitoring, told the Rossiiskaya Gazeta newspaper.
The relentlessly spreading wildfires have devastated several regions south and west of the capital, despite a major firefighting operation that includes nearly 200,000 people and dozens of planes.
The fires have destroyed residential houses, military facilities, a significant share of Russia’s wheat crops and as of Friday claimed the lives 52 people, authorities said.
And it could get much worse: Emergencies Minister Sergei Shoigu warned Friday that the fires in the Bryansk region might send into the air radioactive contamination locked in soil devastated by the Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident of 1986.
“If a fire appears there, the radioactive particles could fly away with the smoke and a new polluted area could appear,” he said.
Moscow has already ordered the evacuation of nuclear and explosive material from Sarov, a top-secret nuclear facility in the Nizhny Novgorod region, which is one of the worst hit. Authorities also ordered the removal of missiles and other defense equipment from a munitions depot at Alabinsk southwest of Moscow.
There were at least 589 fires raging Thursday over 196,000 hectares, up from 529 fires Tuesday and 460 fires Monday.
Russia’s agriculture sector has been worst affected. Thousands of hectares of farmland have been burned. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin Thursday banned wheat exports until the end of the year, sending grain prices on international markets through the roof.
The fires are aided by a severe draught and the hottest summer since temperature recordings began 130 years ago.
Moscow saw its fifth daily temperature record in August Friday as the mercury soared to 96.8 degrees Fahrenheit, beating a record of 95.7 degrees F registered on Aug. 6, 1920, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reports.
Meteorologists warn there won’t be a cool down anytime soon. They predict the heat wave to continue next week and possibly beyond mid-August.

“The current US standard for cell site radiation in the US is 580-1000 microwatts per square centimetre.
Many other countries have set levels hundreds of times lower.
The reason for the disparity is that no one really knows what level of cell tower radiation is safe.
Current limits have been influenced more by economic and political imperatives than by research into health and safety.
More important than the intensity of electromagnetic radiation emitted at the tower is the strength of the resulting EMF wherever people live and work. This depends on the intensity at the source – and one’s distance from it.
Cell towers safe distance
Different cell sites emit different amounts of radiation.
Radiation Levels from a single cell site vary, depending on usage. Even maintenance issues can affect how much radiation a cell site is currently producing.
Radiation around a single cell tower may not be uniform – there can be hot and cold spots.
Measurement with a suitable meter is the only way to know how much radiation you are receiving at a particular spot.
But it seems that 400 metres is a safe distance for most people, and smaller distances may also be safe in some cases.
Cell tower health effects
Individuals differ in their response to similar levels of EMF radiation.
For some people, short term effects from cell tower radiation exposure may include headaches, sleep disorders, poor memory, mental excitation, confusion, anxiety, depression, appetite disturbance and listlessness.
This list is not intended as a diagnostic aid, as each symptom here can have many causes.
But if you and your family do not experience any of these symptoms you are probably not being overwhelmed by cell tower radiation.

A statistical evaluation of over 200 representative high frequency field measurements is presented for the years 2001 and 2002.
Measurements were conducted at different distances and directions using a frequency selective spectrum analysis to obtain only GSM power densities… Derived from this data, GSm cellular phone tower radiation is dominant in comparison to FM radio or TV emissions.
The median power density was found to be in the range of 200 µW/m2 with the maximum level exceeding 100,000 vW/m2. A total of 25 percent of the power densities exceeds 1,000 uW/m2, which has been suggested to be the average threshold value for non-thermal biological effects.
Two of the most important factors are the distance and the direct line of sight to the antenna site. At the typical residential cell tower distance of about 250 m in cities, with direct line of sight, the observed levels are in the range of 200 µW/m2.
The results show that, especially for future cellular UMTS applications, there are several options to minimize additional HF radiation exposures for the population and reduce the potential risk for harmful exposures…

The power density values are displayed in Figure 2 in respect to line of sight/without line of sight and the distance to the antenna site. It is obvious, that especially in proximity to the antennas site (250 m), the GSM Radiation Levels are scattering due to various influencing parameters and cannot be calculated easily by using antenna power and distance modest only.
Table 1 shows a significant systematic difference between the percentile data from line of sight and without line of sight measurements.
Figure 2 displays the separated sets of data with trend lines decreasing exponentially to larger distances with lower exposures for without line of sight measurements in the range of 90% reduction (-10dB).

Charles Graham, PhD, physiologist at the Midwest Research Institute in Kansas City, MO., has conducted studies indicating that electromagnetic radiation alters hormone levels. (35)
When women were exposed to elevated levels of EMR overnight in the laboratory serum estrogen levels increased. Studies have shown that elevated estrogen levels are a risk for cancer development. Also, testosterone levels in men were reduced following exposure to EMR. Reduced testosterone levels have been linked to prostate and testicular cancers.
Much is written today about the harmful effects of “estrogen mimickers” produced from the multitude of many chemicals and pollutants in the environment. Indeed, these products that mimic the effects of estrogen have a damaging effect on the body in terms of their disruption to proper hormonal balance.
Dr. Graham believes that electromagnetic radiation may fit the description of an endocrine disruptor better than many of the known environmental hormone mimickers. He feels this occurs because EMR appears to cause its effects by acting on and through hormones as opposed to acting as a hormone as mimickers do.
For many years breast cancer patients all over the world have been prescribed a drug called tamoxifen as a means to prevent recurrence of breast cancer. In a study published in Electricity and Magnetism in Biology and Medicine in1998, it was shown that tamoxifen lost its ability to halt the proliferation of cancer cells when exposed to EMR. (36)
The amount of electromagnetic radiation used to produce this effect was only 12 milligauss. This amount of EMR is generated when commonly used appliances like hairdryers, vacuum cleaners, can openers, computers, microwave ovens, desk lamps, and electric clocks are in use in the home.
Imagine the implications of this finding. Women who were taking a drug to help prevent recurrence of breast cancer may have had their medication rendered useless by the exposure to EMR from common household appliances!
